Biography from Charleston Renaissance Gallery:
| Don Cooper’s training with Jim Herbert at the University of Georgia in the 1960s was certainly an adequate preparation for a career painting works that belong to what might be called the “fantastic realism” school of southern art. He himself has said that he is “looking for something I’ve never seen before—something described by its difference . . . the mystery of the space between reality and the imagination.”
(Cooper’s comments are excerpted from the catalog of the Awards in the Visual Arts 4, published by The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1985.)
