This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Director of the Coale School of Art in Baltimore, Donald Coale was born there and studied with John Sloan and Leon Kroll. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following, submitted August 2002, is from Heather Lynn Coale Bailey:
Donald Coale, an artist for more than 50 years, was one of Baltimore's most esteemed artists and teacher of art. He exhibited extensively in France, Germany, Holland, Israel, and Switzerland as well as the United States. His works can be found in the private collections in France and Switzerland, and also in the Helena Rubinstein Museum in Tel Aviv.
In this country his work can be found in the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Phillips Memorial Gallery and the Corcoran in Washington, DC; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; and in numerous local galleries.
As a teacher, Mr. Coale could claim many professional artists in Baltimore City as former pupils. To his pupils, he conveyed the spirit of art that goes beyond the usual teachings of painting. Mr. Coale, philosopher as well as artist, received his art education primarily at the Maryland Institute, the Fontainbleau Academie of Fine Arts in France, and the Phillips Gallery School of Art in Washington, DC. He also studied in Mexico. His entire schooling was done on scholarships. Mr. Coale died at the age of 80 on December 25, 1985.
