This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Douglas Granvil Chandor is noted for his skill as an accomplished portrait painter. During his career he painted many notable figures including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sir Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II.
Chandor was born in Warlingham, England in 1897, and raised in County Surrey. He attended Radley College, Berkshire form 1910-1914. Following service in the military, Chandor enrolled in the School of Arts and Crafts, Bloomsbury, England, and then attended the Slade School of Art with study under Henry Tonks. Then Chandor began accepting portrait commissions and establishing his portrait painting career.
In 1926, he traveled to New York City at the urging of art dealer Sir Joseph Duveen, and this marked the beginning of his career in the United States. Chandor married Ina Kuteman Hill of Weatherford, Texas in 1934. During this period he designed the well-known Chandor Gardens.
Chandor maintained studios in Weatherford, Texas, and in New York City to accommodate sittings for his subjects. In 1945, President Roosevelt commissioned Chandor to paint a portrait of Sir Winston Churchill. Chandor's last portrait was of Queen Elizabeth II, commissioned by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1952. Other portraits include Texas painter Frank Reaugh, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt; Sam Rayburn, speaker of the House of Representatives; Andrew Mellon, secretary of the Treasury; Texas governor Buford Jester, and Lady Clementine Churchill.
Chandor died in Weatherford of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Exhibitions for the artists include the Royal Academy of Arts, London; Texas Centennial Exposition, Dallas; Greater Texas and Pan-American Exposition, Dallas, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
