| From Tennessee, Dudley Carpenter was a painter, illustrator and teacher who lived in New York City; Denver, Colorado; La Jolla and Santa Barbara, California. He studied at the Art Students League in New York and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens, Aman-Jean and Benjamin Constant. He exhibited with the Paris Salon and won an honorable mention in 1911.
Carpenter lived in the East until 1909, then moved to Denver, and in 1921, settled in Southern California. He first lived in La Jolla and by the 1930s was living in Santa Barbara where he remained until his death on May 15, 1955. He was a member of the Art Associations of Denver, Carmel, and Santa Barbara, and his work is in the Santa Barbara Museum.

Dudley Saltonstall Carpenter was the son of Gilbert Salstonstall Carpenter (1836-1904) and Elizabeth Thatcher Balch (1837-1914). He married on 22 Jan 1910 in Denver, Denver, CO to Margaret Stafford van Wagenen (1881-1921). He was born on 26 Feb 1870 in Asche Barracks, Nashville, Davidson, TN. He died on 19 May 1955 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA. He was cremated and his ashes were put in the Pacific Ocean.. Carpenter was was a fine artist who lived in New York, Paris, Denver, La Jolla and Santa Barbara. His grandson, with the same name, used Family Bible Records and handwritten corrections to his Carpenter Memorial (See below) to help provide a genealogical update to the Carpenter Encyclopedia of Carpenters' 2001. Dudley is a descendant of Captain William Carpenter (1605-1658/1659) of Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. BOOK: Amos B.
