Biography from Nichols Taos Fine Art Gallery:
| Ed Copley was born July 4, 1944. He is a member of the
prestigious ASCR, American Society of Classical Realism, AIC, American
Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works and
co-founder of WAA, Western Artists of America. He is one of the
1,000 registered in Washington, D.C. for restoring works of art on
canvas, wood panels and oil paintings on copper. Ed attended two
fine art schools; CCAD, Columbus College of Art and Design, and the
Famous Artists School.
After his training, his career started as a commercial
illustrator. He spent many years as a successful illustrator and
painting conservator before turning to fine art full time. When
Ed is not working in his studio, he devotes a portion of his time
researching tribes, sites, and events in order to create a scene.
A lot of time is devoted to finding the right models and clothing for
that scene. His work pattern is one that allows him to mix a palette,
rotate between paintings and work through an evolution of time.
This permits the freedom to let his brush work flow through layers of
paint and allow for the drying time between the canvases. He
likes to do a lot of glazing with his colors. His paintings come to
life with marvels of light and color that show the power of his
technique and expression, capturing the realism of the people he
portrays. Even in his landscapes there has to be a certain amount of
light and drama in order to make a perfect composition.
The knowledge he has gained over the years restoring old master
paintings has helped him to understand their techniques and methods,
which he incorporates with his own creative ability. At times he
is commissioned to recreate certain old master paintings for collectors
who wish to have a copy of a painting they had seen in a museum.
With his dramatic use of light and color, Copley's art work continues
to be in great demand and is included in museums and private
collections throughout the world. |
