| Elizabeth Crowningshield was born in Minnesota on June 20, 1885. Elizabeth Ritchel began painting as a teenager and studied at the Greely School of Art in Greely, Colorado.
In 1908 she married, and in 1927 she settled in San Diego, California where she became a pupil of J. Francis Smith. For 40 years she painted plein air landscapes, portraits, and still life works in oil and watercolor.
Crowningshield was an early member of the La Jolla Art Association (founded by Alfred Mitchell), the La Mesa Foothills Art Association, among others. She exhibited widely in the San Diego and Southern California areas.
Mrs. Crowningshield died at her home in Spring Valley, California (near San Diego) on May 9, 1968.
