| From the American Watercolor Society :
Elizabeth Jean Callan (Betty, to her friends) was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Sept 17, 1918. We lost her in 1976 or 1977; she is listed on the “In Memoriam” page of the 1977 AWS catalog. She studied at the Vesper George School of Art; Jackson Von Ladau School of Fashion, Boston; took courses at Pratt Institute and the Art Students’ League; studied watercolor painting under Edgar Whitney and Mario Cooper. She became a Signature member of the AWS in 1959. She was a member of other art societies, including the Hudson Valley AA and the Catherine L. Wolfe AA. She exhibited and won a number of awards, locally and regionally. She apparently did some fashion illustration and other commercial illustration in the 1940’s. She lived in Pelham Manor, NY (one of NY City’s bedroom communities), and thus was often a volunteer with those local societies. She served as a officer of AWS, and I remember her presiding, all smiles, over huge crystal punch bowls at AWS Opening Receptions at the National Academy Gallery in the 1970’s.
