| | Born in New York on April 6, 1837. Emma Chapin became San Diego's first professional artist when she settled there in 1881. Upon establishing a studio, she taught classes in oil and watercolor painting as well as drawing in ink and crayon. She was a member of the San Diego Art Ass'n and active in San Diego until a fatal heart attack on Dec. 4, 1911.
