| Fred Cooney was born in Indianapolis and attended John Herron Art School. After several years as a business owner, he turned to art full-time and travelled extensively around the United States and Ireland, honing his skills by painting along the way.
He studied under Calib Stone at Monehegan Island, Maine; Albert Handell at Santa Fe, New Mexico; David Lussier at New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Charles Sovele and David Curtis, at Rockport Massachusetts.
Cooney won Best of Show as a first time exhibitor at the Hoosier Salon of which he is a member (Indianapolis and New Harmony divisons) and has had solo shows in Indianapolis. He is also a member of the Indiana Plein Air Painters Society and the Rockport Art Association. He specializes in landscapes in oils.
