|  Born in Worsley, England, Frederick Carder founded Steuben and from 1903 to 1932 designed more than 8,000 varieties of handblown bases, bowls, glasses and candlesticks.
Carder also introduced Gold Aurene and eventually several other colors, Verre de Soie, Alabaster, and Cyprian. In 1918 Carder sold Steuben to Corning Glass Works after the government had declared the company non-essential and stripped it of its necessary components. In 1932, Carder became Art Director of the Corning Glass Works in Corning, New York after a new president, Arthur Armory Houghton Jr took over the Steuben division. After renaming the division Steuben Glass, Houghton ordered the remaining inventory of Carder's colored glass destroyed. The new Steuben glass defined itself by its strikingly clear glass and modernism, the prevailing fashion of the times.
Carder was also a landscape painter.
