Born in Worsley, England, Frederick Carder founded Steuben and from 1903 to 1932 designed more than 8,000 varieties of handblown bases, bowls, glasses and candlesticks.

Carder also introduced Gold Aurene and eventually several other colors, Verre de Soie, Alabaster, and Cyprian. In 1918 Carder sold Steuben to Corning Glass Works after the government had declared the company non-essential and stripped it of its necessary components. In 1932, Carder became Art Director of the Corning Glass (showing 500 of 936 characters).
