This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| A sculptor of portrait heads and art critic in New Jersey for the Asbury Park Press from 1945 to 1962, Fritz Cleary was born in New York City. He has been described as "a sculptor of variety and rare insight into human personality" (Reynolds 182) and by age 30 was so successful that he was exhibiting across the United States.
He grew up in a cultured family with musical parents. In high school, he studied with Greek sculptor, Polynogtis Vargis, and then attended the National Academy of Design as a student of Charles Keck followed by enrollment in the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. He was also a wood-carving student of Alexander Finta.
In order to make money, he took up writing and lecturing on art and teaching sculpture.
Cleary became a member of the National Sculpture Society, Allied American Artists, the Clay Club and the National Federation of Arts. Exhibition venues included the Pennsylvania Academy and the National Academy of Design.
