This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| A painter, etcher, and decorator, Gabrielle Clements was born in Philadelphia and studied in Paris with Robert-Fleury and Bouguereau. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and the North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester from 1923 to 1948. She was a companion of Ellen Day Hale and spent her summers with Hale at Cape Ann. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note from Michael McCue: Her mother's family spelling was definitely DeVaux. In Philadelphia they like to use "DeVeaux" but in the Carolinas and Boston "DeVaux" is preferred as the artist's middle name. She always signed "DeV." on her works.
I went to Archives of American Art to review Gabrielle Clements' papers. I discovered she used DeV- E - aux there so I suppose we should all go to using the E, even though she did indeed usually sign with only DeV. as the middle.
