This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in San Francisco, George Townsend Cole earned a reputation for his
skill painting southwestern landscapes, although he was not a full-time
painter. His primary interest in capturing the images was
motivated much more by his interest in geology than aesthetics.
His favorite area was the rock formations on the Navajo Reservation in
Arizona. To transport his "on-the-spot paintings without their
cracking, Cole used a technique learned from his Norwegian teacher
Fritz Thaulow. The canvas was prepared to accept gouache or
watercolor paint, and then to the pigments he added a medium containing
egg white and a little glycerine." (Dawdy 91).
George Cole was the son of Cornelius Cole, California pioneer and United States Senator. He
studied at Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna with Eisenmenger, and
in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Leon Bonnat. He settled in Los
Angeles and became an art director for motion picture studios.
He also did miniatures and portraits. He was a member
of the California Watercolor Society.
