This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following submitted August 2005 by Edward Bentley is provided by D. Blake Cady, relative of the artist who is also the source of information about this artist for the archive of the Vose Galleries of Boston.

Born: Dorchester, Massachusetts

A ranking watercolorist, Gertrude Parmelee Cady made her mark in Rhode Island not only as an artist but also as a teacher and active member of the Providence Water Color Club. Her serious study of art began at the Rhode Island School of Design where she worked under two of the more prominent artists in Rhode Island history, Sydney Burleigh and Stacy Tolman.

Gertrude Parmelee Cady was the first secretary of the Providence Water Color Club and excelled in this medium. Her technical skill was well developed and she had the uncanny ability to capture the subtleties of nature scenes, such as the quality of a soft moist atmosphere or sparkling surf. Her paintings were well executed and captured and communicated the activity of a scene in a poetic manner.

Considered a "watercolorist of great charm" (Slocum, 1940), the subject matter she painted varied throughout her lifetime. Scenes of Little Compton are found in her early career when she was studying under Sydney Burleigh at his studio. Landscapes of Brittany and the west coast were painted when the artist was traveling. Of all the watercolors of this period the ones of Ireland are particularly good, reflecting the artist's special feeling for this country. Warren, Rhode Island was another area often seen in her watercolors. This was home for Gertrude, and while the backyard gardens were often the focus of these works, other scenes of New England also captured her interest.

Mrs. Cady continued to paint seriously during her lifetime with the exception of a brief interruption to have children. She received recognition as a significant female artist, having shows at the Providence Art Club, and the Providence Water Color Club and at New York, Boston and Newport galleries.
