| Born in Billings, Montana, Gilbert Carpenter was a painter and art
educator. He studied at Stanford University, the Chouinard Art
Institute and the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris, France. From
1954-60, he was an Instructor of Art at Columbia University and from
1960-64, was Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa.
From 1964-74, he was Chairman of the Art Department at the University
of North Carolina in Greensboro, and from 1974 to 1989, was Director of
the Weatherspoon Gallery in Greensboro.
He died June 6, 2003 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
