Grenville Cottingham, was born on April 16, 1943. He died of pneumonia on February 17, 2007, aged 63.

He studied at Exeter College of Art from 1960-63 and at Liverpool College of Art from 1963-64. He was then employed as the first sea-going artist/tutor to the Seafarers Education Service from 1966-68, traveling around 150,000 miles on 19 different ships.  During his years at sea he studied the sea and ships, frequent subjects of his work. He painted a wide range of marine subjects in oil, watercolor and acrylic.

He also held part-time positions as senior tutor at Hornsey Art School (Middlesex University) and Sir John Cass College (London Guildhall University), but eventually devoted his time to commissions. These included work for P&O, the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Fusiliers, Royal Artillery Woolwich and many financial institutions. There are reproductions of his series of large oil paintings commissioned by Lord Stirling in the 1990s of the larger P&O passenger cruise liners, as well as many watercolours of the P&O passenger ferries. These are now held in the P&O collection.

Grenville was a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists
