This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Teacher and artist, MarGretta Cocking, was born in Mineral Point Wisconsin on August 11, 1894. She spent her childhood on a farm near Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Cocking began a teaching career in 1912. She worked in public schools in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa while studying for eight years at Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen and at the Art Institute of Chicago for one year. She then worked as a teacher and art supervisor in Rapid City, South Dakota before receiving her BS degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1925. She next headed the art Department at the State Normal School in Lewiston, Idaho until 1931. In 1932 Cocking completed a MFA degree from the University of Oregon and began a 24-year career at Black Hills Teacher College in Spearfish, South Dakota.

While teaching art at Black Hill teachers College she helped organize the Black Hills Art Center and worked as its director. Throughout her teaching career MarGretta Cocking produced her own art. She did studies of Idaho landscapes, and a large body of her work was dedicated to South Dakota themes.

Cocking exhibited at one-person shows in western South Dakota and group shows in seven states. Collectors of Cockings include Black Hills State University and the University of Oregon.
