This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following information, submitted by Ann Ramsey, was taken from the collector print certificate to the owner of "Bluegrass Winter", a "Bluegrass Fair Edition", published by Heritage Prints Gallery, 223 Rosemont Garden, Lexington, Kentucky, circa 1974.

"Harold Collins was born in the Bluegrass country of Kentucky and grew up on his father's 'Thistleton', one of the famous horse farms of the state.

Mr. Collins attended prep schools in the South and Midwest.  Following in a year at college he spent two years at art school in Chicago.  Transferring to the Boston Museum School, he continued until completing the sixth year in painting, winning the 'Concours' or painting competition in his final year.

Mr. Collins has painted seventeen college presidents, ten state governors, a president of the A.M.A., several U.S. senators and numerous state, local and Federal judges and many prominent men in business and the professions.

Several years ago, Mr. Collins set himself seriously to paint his native countryside.  He has used transparent watercolor for these paintings, the old classic technique employed by the great English watercolorists.  The results have been remarkable.  The artist has shed out the significant things about his country; its moods, its fair days and foul, the cold winter afternoons, the bright autumn days, the days for rabbit and for quail, for riding to the hounds.  He has painted the horses at play, feeding, running and standing cold and forlorn in a winter pasture, and the people who take care of the horses and think of little but horses.

Most of all the artist has touched the note of sadness which lies in the deserted house, an abandoned barn, a fallen fence.  People have left the land, they have gone to the cities and when they see a Collins painting it all comes back in a rush of fond remembrance.  No wonder the artist is unable to fill the demand for his originals."
