| | Born in Pau, France on Sept. 28, 1818. Cambuston was the earliest known art teacher in California. By 1841 he was active in Monterey where he taught drawing, topography, and had a small printing press. Because of a personal dispute with the local Mexican authorities, he was forced to leave Monterey in 1846. He settled in San Francisco and the first news of the gold discovery was printed on his press.
