| Born in Reedley, California, Howard Clapp became an active watercolor painter in the Los Angeles area where he taught that method and lectured on art history. He served three terms as president of the California Watercolor Society, and in the 1950s exhibited with that organization.
Clapp studied at the University of California at Los Angeles, and from his years as a student developed an abstract style focused on architectural subjects.
