This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| "Ida B. Carmichael (b. 1884, Windham Center, Ontario, Canada, d. 1981)
enjoyed a long career as an artist and educator. She was known
for abstract oil paintings, often completing series of paintings
inspired from a theme such as Hawaiian legends or Finnish folk tales
collected in Elias Lonnrot's Kalevala.
Her work was included in numerous exhibits throughout Ohio during her
lifetime, and a retrospective exhibit was organized in 1983.
Carmichael was active in several local, state and national
organizations, including: the Cincinnati Modern Art Society, Cincinnati
Woman's Art Club, Museum Association of Cincinnati, National Education
Association and the Ohio Education Association. (Cincinnati Art
Galleries, Cincinnati Modernists, 1930/90, 2000)
Carmichael shared her passion for art with others as a teacher of
ceramics at Walnut Hills High School (Cincinnati, OH) and also taught
art classes for adults. One of her greatest concerns in art
education was how to relate fine arts to everyday living, leading to
her doctoral dissertation.
Her thesis for her Master's degree in education, Craft work as an early educational force and its present status in secondary education, (1932) is available at the University of Cincinnati. Carmichael's doctoral dissertation, Consumer Education through Art Appreciation, (1945) is available at the University of Oregon."
