| Landscape, portrait and miniature painter, James Arthur Cleveland was born in Salem, Massachusetts (1811). His father was Captain William Cleveland, James moved from Salem (after 1837) and it is believed that he moved to Ohio, married there and they had a son (c. 1840).
Later he appears as a landscape and miniature painter in Rochester, New York (in 1844 and 1845), but may have been in New York City around 1839.
Cleveland drew ten plates for John Delafield's "Inquiry into the Origins of the Antiquities of America," published in New York City, 1839. Cleveland was working in New York City from 1847 to 1852, in Tarrytown, NY from 1854-1857 and again in New York City in 1858.
