| | Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1855. Carle was a self-taught artist except for a brief period at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was in London for 18 years, Bristol (Connecticut) and New York for 12 years before retiring to Los Angeles about 1919. He died there on February 24, 1931. A chemist and psychologist, he was the discoverer of neography, the technique of printing a multicolored etching from one plate. Member: Royal Society of Etchers (London).
