This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| As one of Pennsylvania's earliest artists, James Claypoole Sr was
active as a house painter and glazier and possibly portrait
painter. He was the son of Joseph and Edith Ward Claypoole and the father of the portrait painter, James
Claypoole Jr, The details of his career and those of his son are sometimes
confused.
James Claypoole Sr. was Matthew Pratt's teacher until 1755.
Although some accounts give his place of death as Jamaica and the death date as 1796, the
following information describes his funeral as being in Philadelphia and the year as 1784:
Pennsylvania Mercury and Universal Advertiser, September 24, 1784 Philadelphia
"Departed this life on the 21st inst. in the 63d year of his age,
greatly and deservedly lamented, Mr. James Claypoole of this city, much
esteemed for his probity, benevolent disposition, sincere friendship,
and every social virtue. As a testimony of the love and esteem of his
fellow-citizens, a great number attended his funeral to St. Paul's
church yard, on Wednesday last, where he was buried. The many good
qualities which united in this gentleman, render the tribute of
reverence justly due to his memory."
