| The following is from Deanna Barton, former wife of the artist: .
James Richard Campbell (Jim) was born 1942 in Troy, Alabama and lived in Indiana and Texas during four years with the Air Force. He moved to California in 1967 and attended the Art Center College of Design, graduating with Honors in 1973.
He and four others from his Graduating Class were chosen to go to Connecticut to study side by side five days a week for approximately seven months, with the TOP ILLUSTRATORS in the US. Bob Peak, Mark English, Bernie Fuchs, Bob Heindel, Alan Cober, Fred Otnes, Gilbert Stone had just began the now famous Illustrator's Workshop, of which Jim was one of the first students. Jim and the other four apprenticed each day in a different Illustrator's Studio. After the first two years, the Illustrator's Workshop was condensed into a one-month-per-year intensive training course.
Because of the superb training, Jim was immediately signed on with an artist's representative. From the very beginning, his illustrations were seen on newsstands and in bookstores. They have appeared in all the Woman's Magazines, (Good Housekeeping, McCalls, Ladie's Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Woman's Day, etc), on Time Magazine Covers, record album covers, and in TV Guide, the Readers Digest's Magazines and Condenced Books. He has illustrated for Sports Magazines and many Children's Books.
His work has been chosen to appear in several of the Society of Illustrators Annuals and Art Exhibits. His Art work has won numerous awards, including many from the Society of Art Director's. He also taught Advanced Illustration at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT. After living and working in CT for about 20 years, Jim moved back to his home town of Troy, Alabama. He continues to do Illustration, but spends more time doing Gallery Work and commissioned portraits. He has done portraits for, and of celebrities, politicians and athletes.
