| The following biography has been provided by the artist.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jill-Ann Cherofsky established her reputation through her portraits, figures and genres, particularly of New York subject matter.
She was raised in New York and attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she took classes in the evening after working in the financial industry to fulfill her love of art.
Barbara Shefflin, her sole parent was afflicted with a malignant brain tumor while Jill-Ann was graduating high school and she died soon afterward. Jill-Ann could not afford the luxury of college, but had to quickly work to stay alive. She fell into the financial industry and worked that career for 17 years. She realized she had to feed her love of art and took evening courses to earn her degree. Soon afterward, she developed a corneal pregnancy and spent the next four months healing emotionally and physically from the rare condition, this is when she settled on an art career. When she regained her health, she studied with Marvin Mattelson.
During this time, she developed her unique style inspired by the Russian Impressionism combined with influences of the Realist art movement.
In 2002, she moved permanently to Staten Island and focused on her pastels. She lives with her husband and cat while maintaining her studio in their home. In 2004, she was elected to the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she will continue to hone her skills.
Cherofsky works in a traditional style, with people of Staten Island, dominating her compositions. During her career, Cherofsky exhibited with Limner Gallery and then Alliance of Queens Artist, both in New York.
