This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| John Cosby, born in 1955 in Hollywood, operates in both worlds of
illustrations and fine art. He paints brushy land and seascapes,
city scenes and interiors, many with broadly suggested figures.
Primarily a California artist, living in Laguna Beach, Cosby has
painted in a variety of locations from New York City and northern New
Mexico to Hawaii, Europe and Asia.
Fifth Avenue Dogs, a
24 x 26 oil painting based on a photograph of New York City, contrasts
a middle-ground hot dog cart and umbrella and a few passersby and cars
with the trees lining the Avenue just outside Central Park.
Day at the Beach,
oil, 12 x 24, depicts three foreground sunbathers, with their gear and
umbrella, and backs to the viewer, facing the ocean waves rolling
toward shore.
As a child, Cosby's interest in art was supported
by his grandmother, who was also an artist. He later worked seven
years as a commercial artist. Before that, he was an advance man
for Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1972 to 1976,
leaving when he was twenty-two year old. During this time, he also drew
cartoons for the Chesapeake Boatman newspaper in Washington, D.C.
He went to California in 1980.
An organizer as well as an artist, Cosby later founded the Laguna Plein
Air Painters Association, of which he also was President. He is a
member of California Art Club and Oil Painters of America.

Hawaii, and Taos, New Mexico.
A special interest is depicting
people in motion such as crossing the street or eating in a cafe. He
became the subject of a PBS documentary in 2000 that shows him painting
on location in San Francisco.
A special exhibition of his work
was held in Spring, 1999 at the Know Gallery in Denver, Colorado, and
