This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in San Francisco, John Cosgrave became a magazine illustrator, primarily of marine subjects, and was also a painter, engraver, writer, and graphic artist. He did covers and other illustrations for "Life", "Fortune", and "Yachting" magazines, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica did a reproduction of his painting "Yacht America".
Source: Peter Falk, "Who Was Who in American Art" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is from Kristi Jalics:
"Although I am aware of his prize-winning art for "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch", I am most interested in him as the illustrator for the covers of best-selling novels by Angela Thirkell and D.E. Stevenson, which came out both in the UK and the USA from the 30s through the 60s. D.E. Stevenson dedicated her book "Sarah Morris Remembers" to him after his death. For both of them his covers were most often evocative of English Country life. For "Mrs. Tim Flies Home" by D.E. Stevenson, a book in which Constable is discussed by two characters, his cover is an adaptation of Constable's "The Haywain", with an airplane in the sky. |
