This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Amateur sculptor and painter, John Stevens Cogdell was born in South Carolina (1778) and became a lawyer. After a visit to Italy in 1800, he began painting and by 1825 he began modelling in clay and later in plaster and marble.

He exhibited at the National Academy, of which he was an Honorary Member, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Artists' Fund Society, the Boston Athenaeum, and the American Academy. Later in Charleston, Cogdell held a number of public offices and served as a bank president. He died in Charleston, 1847.
