| | Born in Ogdensburg, NY on Oct. 18, 1836. A self-taught sculptor, Combs learned the anatomy of animals as a teenager while working as a butcher. He arrived in California in 1870 and settled in San Jose. He soon established a marble and granite business which he ran until 1900. His portrait busts were highly praised by the local press. He died in Walla Walla, WA on April 2, 1909. Exh: Calif. State Fair, 1872-83.
