An itinerant painter who was born in Massachusetts, Joseph Chandler was
a typical folk artist who traveled from place to place painting
portraits, but unlike many of them who remained anonymous, he signed
and dated his paintings on the backs of the canvases. He also
painted an occasional still life and landscape.
He was
especially skilled with child portraits in that he captured the
awkwardness of his sitters and often included toys and pets and a
landscape in the background- (showing 500 of 1071 characters). |
