| | Born in New Albany, IN on April 14, 1863. Josephine Edwards appears to have moved to San Francisco when quite young. While at Mills College she began her art studies under Giuseppe Cadenasso and continued at the San Francisco School of Design and in Paris. After marrying Harris C. Capwell in 1890, the couple settled in Oakland where they established a department store. Mrs. Capwell remained active in the local art scene until her demise on April 21, 1951. Although her works are rare, she was known as a painter of landscapes, marines, and florals. Exh: Mechanics' Inst.
