Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

From Orgaz, near Toledo, Spain, Juan Sanchez Cotán has an ongoing reputation for chiaroscuro still-life painting, although he also did primarily religious subjects after 1604, when he became a monk in the Carthusian monastery at Granada.  His signature style is arranged vegetable still lifes on a ledge or shelf, which gives them a geometric stability. "Each form is scurtinized with such intensity that the pictures take on a mystical quality, conveying a feeling of wonder and humility in front of the humblest items in God's creation." (Web)

Before joining the religious order, he was active as a painter in Toledo for nearly twenty years.  His clientele were members of the city's aristocracy, and he painted religious scenes and portraits as well as still life.  It was a period of Renaissance awakening, and intellectuals were especially fascinated with the experimental and 'worldly' subject of still life in the face of the pervasive religious depictions.
