From Orgaz, near Toledo, Spain, Juan Sanchez Cotán has an ongoing reputation for
chiaroscuro still-life painting, although he also did primarily religious
subjects after 1604, when he became a monk in the Carthusian monastery
at Granada. His signature style is arranged vegetable still lifes on
a ledge or shelf, which gives them a geometric stability. "Each form is
scurtinized with such intensity that the pictures take on a mystical
quality, conveying a feeling of wonder and humility in front of the
humblest items in God's creation." (Web)
Before joining the religious order, he was active as a painter in
Toledo for nearly twenty years. His clientele were members of the
city's aristocracy, and he painted religious scenes and portraits as
well as still life. It was a period of Renaissance awakening, and
intellectuals were especially fascinated with the experimental and
'worldly' subject of still life in the face of the pervasive religious
depictions.
