Biography from Mauna Kea Galleries:
Juliette Cooke was born in Honolulu on August 21, 1843; she was the daughter of Amos Starr and Juliette Cooke and the wife of Joseph B. Atherton. The artist became interested in painting in the 1880's and possibly took painting lessons from Robert Barnfield, who shared her enthusiasm for the forms and colors of native tropical fish. Atherton made an extensive study of them, evidenced by the ninety-one watercolors and oil studies (now housed in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum) that she made from specimens picked out in early morning visits to a Honolulu fish market.
