This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted June 2003, is from the artist:
Larry Charles is the co-founder of the Trompe l'Oeil Society of Artists. His trompe l'oeil oil paintings are exhibited at a gallery in Santa Fe, and he also shows his watercolor paintings in Singapore and his commissioned work appears frequently in national magazines and books featuring the the top designer homes in New York City.
Prior to becoming a full-time artist, Charles was the worldwide creative director for the largest agency on Madison Avenue for fourteen years. He was an instructor at the University of Southern California in his younger days. He now maintains his home and studio in Arizona, and frequently lectures and writes articles for international art magazines.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT The appeal of painting trompe l'oeil artwork for me is the "wow factor" that comes from creating seemingly three-dimensional objects within a two- dimensional painting space. I believe the objects can't be just random items that are pretty to paint; they must help tell a story or illustrate a theme so that the painting involves the viewer at many different levels.
When I started specializing in the trompe l'oeil genre, I focused on the nostalgic, classic 1800's style of composition and technique. Now, I find myself seeking the challenge of painting 21st Century themes and trying to introduce innovative compositions or "fool the eye" devices into the paintings. I don't paint to sell, I paint to create. It's a challenge that makes every day in my studio a dream career.

WHO Trompe L'oeil Society of Artists: LARRY CHARLES, DONALD CLAPPER, ERIC CONKLIN, GERALD HODGE, MICHAEL MOLNAR, GAYLE B. TATE, GREGORY WEST WHAT paintings in oil on panel, canvas and paper WHEN March 1 - 28, 2002 Opening Reception Friday March 1, 5-7 PM, Santa Fe
We are very pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of America's most accomplished trompe l'oeil artists. The Trompe L'oeil Society of Artists was formed to showcase the paintings of contemporary masters of the genre. The exhibit will feature paintings by its members: Larry Charles, Donald Clapper, Eric Conklin, Gerald Hodge, Michael Molnar, Gayle B. Tate, and Gregory West.
The art form of trompe l'oeil distinguishes itself from other forms of realist painting by its intent to deceive. With the use of perfect perspective and clearly observed light, described with realistic colors, the 'trick' is to make the onlooker believe that a surface is not flat, or that a space exists where there is no space. Translated from the French, trompe l'oeil means "trick the eye". These seven painters have taken the art form to its extreme in excellence and accomplishment. Still life subject matter includes hyper-realistic images of taped paper objects, currencies, chalkboards, stamps, and old photographs - perfect three dimensional images to the eye and remarkable two dimensional realities to the touch.
