This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| A tonalist* landscapist as well as painter of figure and genre scenes, Lewis Cohen was born in London to American parents, and grew up in New York City. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating in 1878. Ill health led him to abandon studies of medicine. Supported by personal wealth, he spent recuperative time in the Adirondacks and five years in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was during this period he developed his artistic talents, which had been a youthful hobby.
In 1884, he enrolled in the Slade School of Art* in London, and later studied with J. Watson Nicoll and portraitist A.S. Cope. In Paris, he was a student of Alphonse Legros, and remained in France for nearly 20 years. He exhibited at the Paris Salon* and the London Royal Academy*. Success brought him collectors of his paintings, and colleagues with much less money spoke of his generosity to them.
In 1904, he established a studio on 67th Street in New York City. Four years earlier he had first visited Old Lyme, Connecticut*, and in 1909, he bought property there, becoming a regular summer visitor and a part of the Old Lyme artist colony along with Henry Ward Ranger and Frank Bicknell. This environment also redirected his painting from figure and genre scenes to pastoral landscapes.
In 1911 in New York City, he was elected an Associate Member of the
National Academy of Design*. He was also a member of the
Salmagundi Club*, and in 1915 at the San Francisco Exposition* was awarded
the Silver Medal in painting.
