Biography from Kunsthaus Lempertz:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Lorenzo A. Castro, an artist of Portuguese descent, was born in Antwerp and it was here that he received his artistic training, possibly from his father Sebastian.  He took several sojourns to Lissabon, Genoa, Sicily and Malta before settling in England.  The earliest signed and dated work by the artist was made in 1672 and is today kept in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Castro was probably active in England from at least 1686, and many of his works are still to be found there in both private and public collections.  For example the Dulwich Picture Gallery which owns seven of his paintings, including the only work with recognizable geographic features which depicts a view of the Dutch town of Hoorn.  The artist's other works all comprise of capricious arrangements of architectural features and ships with a primarily Mediterranean flair.
