Biography from Leonard Davenport Fine Arts / LSDArt:
| Loring Coleman studied at the Middlesex School in Concord and the Scott Carbee School of Art, Boston. His mentors included Herman Dudley Murphy and Charles Curtis Alle. As Head of Art Department at the Middlesex School, Coleman taught painting, sculpture, and art history before resigning to paint full time.
A powerful use of ambiquous symbols marks much of his work. In his 1959 Prize winner, Sentinels, two turned staircase stiles stand in strong light that turns into darkness on the landing of the deserted house. A recent video on his work highlights his 1955 painting, Cathedral, of an Episcopal bishop who committed suicide walking a snowy road arched by towering trees into a sunrise or sunset.

He is a member of the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society and former Art Director and Vice President of the Concord Art Association. |
