Margaret Abigail Smith Cantwell was born Margaret Abigail Smith on July 29, 1844 at Chateaugay, Franklin County New York; she died Sept 8, 1918. She was the daughter of Henry B. Smith, who was a Circuit Court Judge in Franklin County.
During her 74 years, she devoted her time to painting in oils, watercolor and on china as was the custom of the time for young ladies of means.
Margaret Smith and Thomas Cantwell were married on August 18, 1865, and they had three children: Carrie M. Cantwell: Born Feb. 7, 1867, Died Nov. 1 1868 Nettie S. Cantwell: Born Apr. 6, 1868, Died Aug. 12, 1885 William W. Cantwell; Born Nov. 21, 1869, Died Apr. 22, 1950
Margaret Abigail Smith, as a young lady, traveled in Europe to study the art works in Italy and France. When she returned to Chateaugay, she married Thomas Cantwell and continued her devoted interest in painting. She was active in the Albany, NY art community where she participated in the social art world. After her children were grown, she would go to New York City to spend weeks studying the classic art techniques at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while staying with her son William Cantwell and his wife Helen. She enjoyed art for arts sake.
