This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from an anonymous Source:

Margaret Abigail Smith Cantwell was born Margaret Abigail Smith on July 29, 1844 at Chateaugay, Franklin County New York; she died Sept 8, 1918. She was the daughter of Henry B. Smith, who was a Circuit Court Judge in Franklin County.

During her 74 years, she devoted her time to painting in oils, watercolor and on china as was the custom of the time for young ladies of means.

Margaret Smith and Thomas Cantwell were married on August 18, 1865, and
they had three children:
Carrie M. Cantwell: Born Feb. 7, 1867, Died Nov. 1 1868
Nettie S. Cantwell: Born Apr. 6, 1868, Died Aug. 12, 1885
William W. Cantwell; Born Nov. 21, 1869, Died Apr. 22, 1950

Margaret Abigail Smith, as a young lady, traveled in Europe to study the art works in Italy and France. When she returned to Chateaugay, she married Thomas Cantwell and continued her devoted interest in painting. She
was active in the Albany, NY art community where she participated in the
social art world. After her children were grown, she would go to New York
City to spend weeks studying the classic art techniques at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, while staying with her son William Cantwell and his wife
Helen. She enjoyed art for arts sake.
