This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Margaret Herrera (Chávez) (1912–1992)
She was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico and grew up on a ranch in Gascon in Mora County. She was one of a handful of known and documented Nuevomexicana artists working in New Mexico from the 1950’s through the 1960’s. Experimental and prolific, she worked in various media including oils, watercolor, print, textiles, ceramics, and sculpture. The fluid lines and saturated colors of her work embody the rural landscapes and urban settings that compose the real and imagined character of New Mexico.
Margaret Herrera, or Mrs. Paul Chávez, when using her married name, began a lifelong profession as an elementary teacher in Las Vegas and worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) County Extension Service in Taos and Las Cruces until 1944. She received her art degree in 1953 from Highlands University which included study in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. She created fervently, traveled extensively, and figured prominently in many artistic and educational organizations including the National League of American Pen Women. Herrera’s works have been exhibited in several New Mexico museums and in galleries in Texas, Florida, New York, Missouri and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A collection of archival material from the artist’s private papers, including correspondence, exhibit listings, inventories of art, and other ephemera is housed in the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts Department archive.
