Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Marianne Clouzot was born in 1908 at Vésinet. Her father Henri Clouzot was a celebrated art critic, and encouraged her from an early age; Marianne sold her first drawings at the Galerie Devambez in Paris at the age of ten! She studied at the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris from 1923, and subsequently studied painting under André Lhote.

Marianne Clouzot's first solo show at Galerie Charpentier in 1935 was a critical success. Like Raoul Dufy and Sonia Delaunay, Marianne Clouzot worked in fashion as well as art; from 1935-1960 she designed fabrics for the couturier Jacques Heim.

As a printmaker, Marianne Clouzot produced etchings*, drypoints* and lithographs* for a variety of fine publications through the 1940s and 50s, before turning her attention to more conventional book illustration.

Marianne Clouzot's work divides into two phases: one in which she incorporates the sinuous curves of Art Deco* into a Cubist* aesthetic, and one in which she expresses the same sensibility through conventional representation.

In 1983 she was made a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in recognition of her outstanding achievements. There was a retrospective in Niort in 1995. Marianne Clouzot carried on drawing into her hundredth year, which was sadly not to be completed.
