This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted January 2005, is from the artist, born in 1969.
The artist has had a life-long interest in nature and science, which work as the main inspiration for her drawings, scientific illustrations, etchings and oil paintings. Graduated in 1991 from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, she has worked as a biologist and is now enjoying her livelihood as a Scientific Assistant in Malacology (study of Mollusks) at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In addition, she maintains an active artistic life and continues to exhibit her works.
The artist, primarily self-taught, studied under Judith Mogul in Chattanooga, Tennessee during the mid to late nineties, and then under Richard Serrin in Florence, Italy from 2001-2003. Nearly four years spent living in Italy exposed Marla Coppolino to Old Master's materials and methods, and instilled a special care and attention to the craftsmanship of all her works.
The artist finds inspiration in the complexity of nature from the micro to the macro levels, and the harmonious mathematical relationships found throughout the Universe. The synthesis of influences, from anatomical forms to exposure to the great Italian masterpieces, have awakened a unique expression from this artist. Her works speak of both nature and of the Universal spark which brings life to matter.
Selected Exhibitions: 2003 Still Classical Group Exhibition, travelling show, New York City, Rhode Island and Rome, Italy
