Biography synopsis
Mary Alberta Cleland studied at the Art Association of Montreal in
1894, and would go on to teach there from 1898-1937. She worked with a
broad range of subject matter, including landscapes, city scenes,
portraits, floral studies and interiors. The landscapes she painted
were predominately in oils and watercolours, whereas her portraits were
done in pastels. She exhibited her work at the Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts Spring Exhibitions regularly from 1897 to 1943, as well as at the
Royal Canadian Academy annuals from 1899 to 1943.
