This biography from the Archives of AskART:
For many years, Sister Maureen Carey, a member of the Dominican order, had been keeping a written journal in which she recorded her thoughts and experiences. But after taking a watercolor workshop, she began to include watercolor paintings in it as well. She had had an interest in art since junior high school, but before taking the workshop, she says, she had never gone beyond dabbling in it.

Carey meditates every day. On a retreat not long ago, after a period of meditation, she found herself doodling in her journal. "I noticed that the shapes I was forming expressed visually what was going on in my mind," she recalls. That experience, coupled with the stress she felt from her work with homeless people and her interest in watercolor, led her to take the workshop. Since then, Carey has regularly used meditation--what she calls "spending quiet time to tap the creativity within"--to produce watercolor journals.
