This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following was submitted by the artist in May of 2006:
Born on September 14, 1948 in Carmel, New York. I spent most of my life growing up on Long Island where my father worked as an engineer for Grumman Aviation. My passion surfaced early and as a young child, I spent hours drawing birds and copying images from magazines. As the passion continued and I started bringing home ribbons from school and county art fairs my parents arranged for private oil painting lesson when I was 14 with Raymond Fornari, an art director from NYC.
I thought for certain I would be an artist and art teacher but the lack of financial stability would turn my path in many different directions before I would devote full time to my art. My best friend was making a lot of money in the beauty business so I decided to get a license and cut hair and made a very good living doing so.
I started taking classes at the local community college but then dropped out and moved to Manhattan to study acting. Being an emotional artist at heart, I couldn’t take the personal rejection so I went back to the beauty business and built a very lucrative business on Madison Avenue and 64th Street, painting all the while.
I took classes at Fashion Institute of Design and designed a line of jewelry that was sold at Bloomingdale's and Henri Bendel’s and designed a complete couturier line of clothing, which Bendel’s bought but I couldn’t deliver at the right price point. I continued to paint and sell my work privately.
One day my landlord commissioned me to do a painting and delivered a 30” by 40” canvas that stood blank in my apartment for 6 months. I had never painted anything that large and was completely intimidated. I then went to the Art Students League where I studied painting with Mario Cooper, president of the Watercolor Society.
I then started painting in watercolor and gouache and was offered a show in Paris. A decade later I would have children and devote the majority of my time to them. I am now a full time painter and teach two days a week in my studio.
I think all artists see life a bit differently. I am very emotional and extremely sensitive to the visual impact of whatever surrounds me. I am restless and am still discovering who I am. I began painting still lifes and portraits in a very traditional style. My current body of work consists of large (30x40 / 40x 60) night scenes of Manhattan and rural landscapes of Hunterdon County, New Jersey in a modern fauvist style. The one thing about painting that is always consistent is the rush of excitement I get loading my palette before I begin a new painting.
