This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Oscar Coddron was a professor at the Royal Academy of Art in Gent (Gand) Belgium during the majority of his artistic career from the early 20th Century until the 1950’s.  He lived in Laatem, in a country ‘villa’ near the Leie (Lys) river, in a then rural area (now a suburb) just outside of Gent.

In Laatem he became good friends with a social circle of many other Belgian-Flemish artists of that time (‘the Leie school’), including Gust and Leon De Smet, De Sadeleer, Saverijs and others. He had a (non-artist) son, Walter Coddron (whose mother was Stephanie). When his wife Stephanie passed away in the mid-late ‘50’s, he re-married to his sister-in-law, Jeannot.

Coddron was primarily a post-impressionist landscape artist who worked in oil, but also did a number of of pen and ink and pencil work drawings. He had many students at the Academy in Gent, who likely know a lot more about his artistic life and contribution than I.

They or the Academy of Art (Schoone Kunsten) in Gent are a more likely source of artistic info than I can provide. As a family member I and my family own a number of his works, both landscape oils and drawings to keep his memory in our family.

Written and submitted by Frank Verlot, the great nephew of Oscar Coddron, who was married to Verlot's grandfather’s (Oscar Verlot) sister, Stephanie Coddron (nee Verlot)
