R. A. Clifford -- Rollin Alonzo Clifford (American, 1833/35-1895).  Originally from Rutland, Vermont, with unknown artistic training, the young Clifford may (by attribution) have associated with the itinerant portrait artist Jesse/Jessie Atwood, most active in Philadelphia between 1839 and 1854.  [Note 1] Clifford had, in any case, moved further west by 1856, appearing in the 1857-1858 Milwaukee County Directory as a “Portrait painter”, operating on Kirby’s Block and boarding with L (showing 500 of 9492 characters).
