This biography from the Archives of AskART:
After a serious accident which took the life of her partner, Rani Carson began searching for new meaning in her life. She was moved and intrigued by the Rastifarian people during a trip to Jamaica. And after a subsequent trip began adopting many of the beliefs of the religion. Carson paints colorful images of Rastifarian people and the lush surrounding in Jamaica. Her respect and love of the culture are evident in her work.

The Rastifarian people became a great inspiration for Carson's art and she now has a second home in Jamaica where she spends nine weeks every year. The rest of the year Carson is a professor of art and curator of the art gallery at Suffolk Community College's Western Campus on Long Island, New York.

Carson graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English literature. She studied art with Herman Rose at the New School for Social Research in New York and earned a master's of fine arts degree from Brooklyn College. Rani Carson's work has been exhibited in the United States and Jamaica.
