Reid Kendrick Crowell was best known for his work in illustration as a graphic artist, and he was also a wood carver and teacher, holding a position at the Dallas Art Institute from 1929 to 1934.

Crowell was born in Alta, Iowa in 1911.  His mother, Grace Noll Crowell, was a talented writer and from 1936 to 1939, was Poet Laureate of Texas.

He received his art training in Minnesota, Colorado, and at the Dallas Art Institute.  At the Institute Crowell studied under Olin Travis, Ruby Stone, Charles McCann, Howard Shoup, and Karl Gasslander, after winning an honorary scholarship. Later, he taught at the Dallas Art Institute.

During his art career, Crowell produced many illustrations, which he sold to various magazines, including Field and Stream, Progressive Farmer, and Farm and Ranch.

He died in Dallas in 1991.

Exhibitions for Crowell included the Annual Allied Arts Exhibition, Dallas; International Print Exhibition, Cleveland, Ohio (1935); Texas Centennial Exposition, Dallas (1936); Greater Texas and Pan-American Exposition, Dallas; Texas General Exhibition (1940); and Philbrook Art Museum, Tulsa Oklahoma (1940).

Biography from ARTexas:
An Iowa native, Reid Crowell studied at the Art Institute of Dallas with Olin Travis, Ruby Stone, Karl Gasslander, and Charles McCann.  Well known for his portraits and genre scenes as well as his graphic work, he exhibited at the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936 and the Greater Texas and Pan American in 1937.

Crowell also became a successful illustrator for Field and Stream and other magazines.  His painting Early Morning Milking was reproduced on the cover of the January 15, 1938 issue of Farm and Ranch.
