| Robert Leo Cotton was a landscape artist and illustrator, and his career was both in Texas and California. He was born in San Antonio in 1880. During his years in San Antonio he was a student of Julian Onderdonk. In addition to his studies with Onderdonk, he attended the Holmes School of Illustration in St. Louis, Missouri. He sketched in Fort Worth and at Trinity Park and Lake Como and painted at the Texas Artist Camp, Christoval, Texas, where he was a charter member.
In 1920, Cotton assisted in organizing the Fort Worth Painter Club, which later became known as the Allied Artist Club of Fort Worth.
In 1925, he moved to Los Angeles where he became Art Director of the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. He continued his landscape painting by making regular trips to the desert areas of Banning and Palm Springs.
He died in Los Angeles in 1946.
Memberships included the Allied Artist Club of Fort Worth; Fort Worth Art Association and the Southern States Art League. Among his exhibitions were the San Antonio Artists Exhibition; San Antonio Art League; Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, Fort Worth, Texas; Southern States Art League Annual Exhibition, and the Painters and Sculptors of Southern California.
